Reana could be a Spanish-language build or a respelling of a shorter name, and the record does not choose. The English word its first syllable approaches was, until surprisingly recently, a required part of how every law in the country was dated.

Where it comes from

Our story of Reana

Until nineteen sixty-three, an English act of parliament was officially dated not by the calendar but by the regnal year — the year of the reign of the monarch on the throne — so a statute was cited as, say, the fourth and fifth of a particular king. Lawyers had to know when each reign began, which is not always obvious, because a regnal year starts on the anniversary of accession rather than on the first of January, so any calendar year overlaps two of them. Reference books existed purely to convert between the two systems. The Acts of Parliament Numbering and Citation Act finally replaced the practice with ordinary calendar years, and that act was itself dated by regnal year, which is the sort of tidiness legal history rarely allows.

No source is documented. It may respell Rena or Reyna, it may be a build on a free front and an ending, or it may be an independent Spanish-language formation. The three lead to different places and nothing in the record separates them.

Pronouncing Reana

ree-AH-nuh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Some families say RAY-nuh in two syllables instead, and the spelling supports both.

Reana sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2001, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Reana sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it simple to write and spell aloud.
  • It reads correctly on sight in Spanish.
What to consider
  • Reanna, Rhianna and Rena will all be written for it.
  • The syllable count is unstable, so the name is said two ways.
  • Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has no honest answer.
