Where it comes from

Our story of Raynette

Free rein is a horse's rein, not a king's reign, and the phrase means slackening the straps so the animal can choose its own pace. It gets written the other way round constantly, because giving somebody free reign sounds like it ought to mean letting them rule — and the mistake is now common enough that dictionaries note it. English has three unrelated words here: rein from Latin retinere, to hold back; reign from regnum, a kingdom; and rain, which is native and much older than either. They fell together in sound during the same vowel changes that produced so many of English's homophones. A great many horse phrases survive in offices where nobody has seen a horse: taking the reins, champing at the bit, getting the bit between the teeth, and reining something in.

The front may be a clipping of Raymond, the English word, or nothing at all. The ending is a French diminutive that English detached from its base long ago. Nothing records what a family meant by joining them.

Fashion outlook

Raynette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Raynetta, Renette and Rainette are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The ending places the name in a particular stretch of American fashion.
  • Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
