Raynell
Feminine
Raynell is given to both — 716 girls and 439 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Raynell joins a short front element to an ending that looks like a name and is not one. It was given to daughters somewhat more often than to sons, which is what happens when a name is assembled out of pieces that carry little signal. The front element is also a word with an unexpectedly large scientific afterlife.

Our story of Raynell
The scattering of light that makes a clear sky blue is named after an English physicist who worked out why: small particles scatter short wavelengths far more strongly than long ones, so the blue end of sunlight is thrown around the sky while the red goes straight through, which is also why a sunset is red. The same man spent years measuring the density of nitrogen and kept getting two slightly different answers depending on whether the gas came from air or from a chemical compound. Rather than round the discrepancy away he chased it, and with a chemist colleague found that atmospheric nitrogen was carrying a previously unknown gas that refused to react with anything. They named it after the Greek for idle. He was given the Nobel Prize in physics for it and the colleague took the chemistry prize the same year, which has happened for a single discovery only a handful of times.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Neither half carries a meaning here. The front may be a clipping of Raymond, the English word, or nothing at all; the ending is a suffix used across a whole family of American names and is not the name Nell, which comes from Helen and Ellen by a different route entirely.

Two syllables with the stress at the back. Both halves keep a full vowel, which is what stops the name collapsing into one syllable in fast speech.

Fashion outlook
Raynell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves detach as short forms, and each is a standing name.
- Back stress gives it a firm, carrying shape.
- The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
- Raynelle, Renelle and Reynell are all recorded and will be written for it.
- It leans to girls, but a real share of children with this spelling are boys, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
- Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
