Where it comes from

Our story of Rayetta

Röntgen called them X-rays because he did not know what they were. X is the algebraic symbol for the unknown, and he used it as a placeholder in the paper he wrote within weeks of noticing that a screen across the room was glowing while his discharge tube was covered in black card. The name stuck in English and in most languages; German and several Slavic languages call them Röntgen rays instead, which he disliked. He refused to patent anything connected with them, on the ground that the discovery belonged to humanity, and gave his Nobel Prize money to his university. Within a year the rays were being used to find bullets and set bones, and within a few more, to sell shoes, before anybody understood what the dose was doing.

The front may be a clipping of Raymond, the English word, or nothing at all. The ending is an Italian feminine diminutive that English detached from its base long ago. Nothing records what a family meant by joining them.

Pronouncing Rayetta

Three syllables with the stress in the middle, which is where the Italian ending puts it. The doubled t is an Italian spelling requirement rather than an English one.

Fashion outlook

Rayetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Rayette, Rietta and Loretta will all be written for it.
  • The ending places the name in a particular stretch of American fashion.
  • Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
