Rashelle spells out the French pronunciation of a name that English says quite differently. English gives Rachel a hard sound in the middle and stresses the front; French says it with a soft sh and puts the weight at the back. This spelling records the second one, which makes it a phonetic transcription rather than a decoration.

Where it comes from

The story of Rashelle

The most famous bearer in nineteenth-century France used only the one name. Élisa Félix, the daughter of poor Alsatian pedlars, sang in the streets as a child, went on the stage at seventeen and within three years was the most celebrated tragic actress in Europe, playing Racine and Corneille to audiences that had thought the classical repertoire dead. She performed across Europe and in America, was received by every court that mattered, and died at thirty-six. Playbills, reviews and the whole of the memoir literature call her simply Rachel, without a surname, which is a form of fame that was unusual then and is rarer now.

Meaning

ewe

The Hebrew name is the ordinary word for a female sheep, and the reading is settled. The French and English pronunciations of it diverge because each language did what it does with the consonant in the middle, and this spelling belongs to the French side of that split rather than to the Hebrew original.

How the name formed

  1. A Hebrew word for a ewe, used as a name
  2. Carried into every European language
  3. French and English splitting on the middle consonant
  4. Rashelle writing the French sound in English letters

Rashelle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1988, with 46 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Rashelle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling tells a reader exactly how the name is said.
  • Shelley, Rae and Elle are three complete names from one certificate.
  • The meaning is concrete, ancient and easy to explain.
What to consider
  • It will be read as a misspelling of Rachel by people who do not know the French.
  • Rochelle is a separate name that this spelling sits very close to.
  • The stress at the back is unusual for an American woman's name.
