Where it comes from

The story of Rasheedah

The same word names one of the most famous objects in the world, and almost nobody knows it. A town on the western mouth of the Nile is called Rashid. French soldiers digging there found a slab of stone carrying one decree in three scripts, and Europe named it after the town as the French heard it: Rosetta. That stone unlocked the hieroglyphs, and the name of a place meaning rightly guided ended up attached to the idea of a key to any difficult code. The word's other great bearer is the philosopher Europe called Averroes — Ibn Rushd, son of right-guidance, whose commentaries on Aristotle were the route by which much of Greek philosophy came back into Latin Europe.

Meaning

Rightly guided, of sound judgment

The Arabic adjective is about guidance and good sense — a person who is on the right road and knows it. It is a settled reading, used of people and, in the masculine, as one of the traditional descriptions of God. The feminine form is the one behind every English spelling of this name.

Rasheedah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1978, with 112 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Rasheedah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, unhedged and genuinely good — a quality rather than an ornament.
  • It is understood across the Arabic-speaking world and much of Asia and Africa without translation.
  • The sounds are all available in English, so nothing about it is hard to say.
What to consider
  • Rashida, Rasheeda and Rashidah are all in circulation, and hers will be spelled as one of them by default.
  • The silent final h invites questions and occasionally gets dropped by clerks.
  • In American classrooms the stress often lands at the front, which is not where it belongs.
