Where it comes from

Our story of Ramie

Ramie is a nettle, grown in east Asia for its bast fiber, and the fiber is remarkable: eight times stronger than cotton, stronger still when wet, resistant to rot and mildew, and with a natural sheen close to silk. Cloth made from it has been found on Egyptian mummies from before three thousand years ago, and it has been cultivated in China for at least six. It should be everywhere and is not, because separating the fiber from the woody stem is stubbornly difficult — the gums that hold it have to be removed chemically or by hand, and no machine has ever made the process cheap enough to compete with cotton. Every few decades somebody announces a solution. The fabric that results is stiff, cool and durable, and it is usually sold blended with something softer.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The fiber's name came into English from Malay and there is no evidence that any family took the name from it. It may equally be a clipping of Ramona or Ramsey, a surname put to use, or a build from the sound. Nothing in the record decides.

Pronouncing Ramie

RAY-mee

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The fiber is usually said RAM-ee with a short first vowel, which is a different reading of the same spelling.

Ramie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1976, with 29 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Ramie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and quick.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
What to consider
  • Rami, Ramey and Remy will all be written for it.
  • The first vowel has two readings, so the name is said two ways.
  • Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has several possible answers and no evidence.
