Our story of Raechelle
John Rae, an Orkney doctor who walked and sledged thousands of miles through the Canadian Arctic, learned from Inuit hunters what had become of Sir John Franklin's lost expedition, including that its last men had been driven to cannibalism; he reported it, and Lady Franklin and Charles Dickens attacked him for believing the Inuit, and he was never knighted, as other Arctic explorers were. Raechelle shares his surname at its front and the soft -chelle of its own day at its end.
