Rachal
Feminine · “Ewe”
Rachal is Rachel with the last syllable respelled, and the last syllable of Rachel is the part nobody actually pronounces: a vowel so reduced that any letter at all can stand for it. The interesting spelling in this name is the other one. The ch stands for a sound English has never had.

The story of Rachal
In Genesis, Rachel is the woman Jacob works fourteen years for, and the only one of the matriarchs not buried with the rest of them. Her name begins with a sound made in the throat, written in Hebrew with the letter chet, and neither Greek nor Latin had a letter for it. Scribes wrote it ch, English readers did what English readers do with ch, and the result is that the name is said as though it rhymed with church while the Hebrew sounds nothing like it. The spelling is a fossil of a sound that never crossed. The name became ordinary in English after the Reformation. Rachel Donelson Jackson, whose marriage was used against her husband in a presidential campaign so viciously that he blamed it for her death, died between his election and his inauguration and never lived in the house. Rachal is a later American respelling of the last syllable, and it changes nothing that can be heard.
Meaning
Ewe
Hebrew rachel is the word for a female sheep, and the text uses it that way as well as using it as a name. Ancient Hebrew naming took animals seriously: Leah is generally read as a cow, Deborah as a bee, Jonah as a dove. A shepherd's daughter called Ewe was not being compared to anything. She was being described in the vocabulary of the world she lived in.

Pronouncing Rachal
RAY-chul
Two syllables, stress on the first, the second reduced almost to nothing, which is why it can be spelled with an a, an e or nothing much. The Hebrew original is closer to rah-KHEL, with the stress at the back and a rasping consonant English does not use.

Fashion outlook
Rachal sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is completely established, so the child is never explaining what it is, only how it is written.
- Rae is a genuinely good short form that stands alone, which gives the name two registers.
- It exists in almost every European language with only a small change of shape, so it travels without translation.
- The standard spelling dominates so heavily that this one will be read as an error, and correcting it never quite ends.
- Nothing is gained in sound by the change, so a child may reasonably ask later why it was made.
- Rachel is a well-worn name for a whole American generation, and this spelling does not make it feel any newer.
