Where it comes from

The story of Rabecca

A servant is sent to find a wife and decides to let a test choose: he will ask a woman for water, and the one who offers to water his camels as well is the right one. Read quickly it sounds like a small courtesy. Ten camels after a long journey drink something like two hundred liters between them, drawn by hand from a well, one jar at a time, by a girl who has just met a stranger — it is an hour of heavy labor volunteered to somebody with no claim on her. The text does not comment. It simply says she did it, and then says she kept doing it until they had finished, which is the detail that gives the game away. The same couple get one other moment that the narrative almost throws away: a king looks out of a window and sees Isaac and Rebecca enjoying each other's company, and works out from that alone that they are married rather than brother and sister. It is the only glimpse of that kind anywhere in the book.

Not established

Nobody has established what Rebecca means. The readings offered — a tie, a snare, one who binds — rest on a guess about a word for tying cattle and have never been demonstrated. The altered vowel here changes nothing.

Fashion outlook

Rabecca sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name is ancient, universally recognized and carried in every European language.
  • It has several well-worn short forms that sound unlike each other.
  • It is read correctly on sight in spite of the altered letter.
What to consider
  • Rebecca is the standard spelling and hers will be corrected to it.
  • The altered vowel is invisible in speech, so she will spell it rather than say it.
  • No meaning can honestly be handed to her.
