Where it comes from

The story of Primitivo

Californian growers had a grape called Zinfandel with no known European parent. Italians in Puglia had one called Primitivo, named for ripening early. Somebody noticed they looked alike, which was controversial, and DNA fingerprinting in the nineteen-nineties established that they are the same variety. That raised a harder question: where did it come from? A long search through Croatian vineyards eventually found a handful of surviving old vines of a nearly extinct local grape that matched both. A variety that produces a very large share of California's wine turned out to be a Croatian one that Croatia had almost lost.

Meaning

first, earliest

The Latin primitivus means the first of its kind, and the reading is settled. Several early saints carried it, which is how it entered use as a name.

Fashion outlook

Primitivo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and can be given in one word.
  • Primo is a ready short form that works in several languages.
  • It is entirely ordinary in Spanish-speaking countries and genuinely rare in the United States.
What to consider
  • The English word primitive is close enough to be heard in it, and it does not mean the same thing.
  • Four syllables is a lot for an American form and it will be shortened by other people first.
  • English readers will put the stress in the wrong place on first sight.
