Where it comes from

Our story of Prestin

Preston means the priest's farm, and there are a great many of them, because a great many English villages had land set aside to support the church. The same logic produced Charlton, the free peasants' farm, Kingston, the king's, Bishopton, Nunton and Monkton. English place names are largely a land register: who held it, what grew there, and what the water was doing. A map of England read with twenty words of Old English turns into an account of eleventh-century property, which is more or less what the Domesday Book is, and the two sources check each other.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The English place name joins the word for a priest to the ordinary ending for a farmstead, and that reading is documented. This spelling is not, and no reason for the altered vowel has been recorded.

Prestin sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2009, with 48 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Prestin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at first sight and rarely needs spelling twice.
  • Pres comes off the front as a short form and works for either sex.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
What to consider
  • The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
  • Preston is far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected to it constantly.
  • No reason for the change is documented, so there is nothing to say when someone asks why.
