The story of Porter
The surname is medieval English, taken from Norman French terms for two ordinary jobs: keeping a gate and carrying goods. Monastic and castle records use it in the doorkeeper sense; town records use it of men who moved cargo by hand. The word stayed alive in English long after it became a family name — a hotel porter, a railway porter, and the dark London beer named in the eighteenth century for the carriers who drank it. Its move into first-name use belongs to the American habit, strong in the nineteenth century and revived in the last few decades, of promoting surnames to given names.
