Where it comes from

Our story of Porche

A porch is a covered entrance, from the Latin porticus, and the same architectural feature gave a school of philosophy its name. The Stoics met in a painted colonnade in Athens, a stoa, and were called after the building rather than after their founder, which is unusual and appropriate for a school that was suspicious of personality. The word stoa is the Greek equivalent of the Latin porticus, so the Stoic school and a suburban porch are the same word in two languages. Roman houses had them too, and the vocabulary for them ran straight into English, which is why so much architectural terminology is Latin worn smooth.

Fashion outlook

Porche sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
  • The sound is familiar from at least two directions, so it is rarely a total puzzle.
  • It is distinctive without containing a single difficult letter.
What to consider
  • The car association is immediate for most readers, and the spelling is one letter away from it.
  • Two pronunciations are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has two candidates and no answer.
