Our story of Porcha
The trial scene is one of the strangest in English drama. A woman disguises herself as a young lawyer, takes over a case in the highest court of a foreign city, delivers a famous speech about mercy that does not work, and then wins by reading the contract more carefully than anybody else has — pointing out that it grants flesh and says nothing about blood. It is a victory on a technicality, delivered by somebody who is committing several serious offenses by being in the room at all, and the play never resolves whether the audience is meant to cheer. The name has a modern problem too: a German sports car shares the sound, and for many Americans that arrives first.

The Roman name it respells is a clan name, and Roman clan names usually cannot be translated. A connection to the Latin word for a pig has been suggested for this one, which is entirely ordinary for Roman family names and is not settled.

Fashion outlook
Porcha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spelling writes the sound directly, which the standard one does not.
- It is short, strong and read correctly on sight.
- The name behind it is literary and genuinely ancient.
- The car is the first association for a great many people.
- Portia is the standard spelling and hers will be corrected to it.
- The Roman name has no agreed meaning.
