The Old English pīpere gave England one of its oldest occupational surnames, alongside Baker, Miller and Fletcher; a piper was a working musician, hired for weddings and processions. As a surname it traveled to America with English settlers and sat quietly in the records for generations. Its life as a girl's first name is a twentieth-century American development, given a considerable push by Piper Laurie, the three-time Oscar nominee whose stage name introduced the sound to a national audience, and later by a witch named Piper Halliwell on a long-running television series.
