Where it comes from

The story of Penni

The Odyssey gives her twenty years of waiting and a great deal of intelligence, and the shroud is only the most famous of her maneuvers — she also sets the contest with the bow that her husband wins, and tests him afterwards when he claims to be who he says. English took the name in the sixteenth century and cut it down almost immediately, because four syllables is a great deal for a household to say. Penny came first, and the bare-i spelling followed in the middle of the twentieth century, when American naming was writing every familiar form that way.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Greek name has no settled source. A connection to a word for a duck is the reading most often offered and rests on a legend rather than on linguistics; another connects it to weaving, which is suspiciously convenient.

Penni sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1962, with 148 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Penni sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
  • It sits behind a name with three thousand years of literary history.
  • Five letters, two syllables, and nothing that has to be explained.
What to consider
  • Penny is the standard spelling and will be written instead.
  • The word is also a coin, and the pun is unavoidable.
  • The bare i ending dates the name to the middle of the twentieth century.
