Peggie
Feminine · “pearl”
Peggy has no letters in common with Margaret and is the same name. Medieval English made pet forms by rhyming: Margaret gave Meg, Meg gave Peg, and the same trick turned Mary into Molly and then Polly, and William into Bill. It is one of the strangest habits English has ever had and it produced some of its most-used names.

The story of Peggie
Rhyming pet forms were a medieval English fashion and they are why several common names look unrelated to their sources: Richard to Rick to Dick, Robert to Rob to Bob, Margaret to Meg to Peg, Mary to Mally to Molly to Polly. Nobody knows exactly why English did this and no other European language did it on the same scale. The forms then became independent names, which is how Peggy came to be given to children who were never christened Margaret at all. The -ie ending is the older of the two English spellings.
Meaning
pearl
Margaret comes from Greek margarites, a pearl, a word that reached Greek from further east along with the object. Meg is the ordinary clipping; Peg is Meg with the initial consonant swapped for rhyme; Peggy adds the familiar ending. The meaning travels the whole way intact even though not one letter of the original survives into the short form. The derivation of the pearl is not disputed and neither is the rhyming.

Fashion outlook
Peggie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Margaret is available as a formal long form with an unbroken European history.
- Two syllables, entirely unambiguous, and said the same way everywhere.
- The rhyming history is genuinely odd and easy to explain in a sentence.
- Peggy is the more common spelling and this one will be rewritten as that.
- It reads as a nickname, and the connection to Margaret has to be explained rather than assumed.
- The name is very strongly associated with the oldest living generations.
