Pearly comes off the pearl, and the pearl has been a name in English for as long as English has had names for gems. The oldest use of it is not a name at all but an elegy: a medieval poem called Pearl in which a father falls asleep on his daughter's grave and dreams her back, crowned and out of reach on the far side of a river, and calls her his pearl from the first line to the last. What is easy to miss now is that Pearl and its everyday forms were given to sons as freely as to daughters.

Where it comes from

The story of Pearly

Two routes brought this name into use and they had nothing to do with each other. The literary one is old. A fourteenth-century poem in a north-west Midlands dialect gives a jeweller a vision of the child he has lost, and calls her Pearl throughout, which fixed the word as something you could name a person. The everyday route was simpler: gem names arrived in quantity with the Victorians, Pearl among them, and in the American South the -y and -ie forms were what actually reached the certificate. They reached it for boys too. The novelist who wrote the American West into being was christened Pearl Zane Grey, and the fact that he published under the middle name for his whole career tells you what he thought of the fashion by the time he was old enough to have an opinion about it.

Meaning

pearl-like

The base word is not in dispute: a pearl, into English from Latin by way of Old French, and this form is the one the language uses for the sheen rather than for the gem itself. That is the entire content of the name. Anything beyond it, a gloss about purity or about rarity, is reading a symbol into a word, and the symbols attached to gems change by century and by country while the word stays put.

How the name formed

  1. Pearl as a name from a medieval poem
  2. Gem names arriving in quantity with the Victorians
  3. Pearly and Pearlie as the written household forms
  4. Given to sons as well as daughters in the South

Pearly sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1925, with 46 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Pearly sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Nobody needs the pronunciation explained, because the whole name is built from a word every English speaker already owns.
  • It works on a small child and as an affectionate name for an adult, which the plain gem name does less easily.
  • It is genuinely rare now without being invented, which is a narrow and useful category to sit in.
What to consider
  • It reads as an ornament rather than as a person to some ears, and that reading is hard to argue with when the name is also a description.
  • The spelling is on the register for boys as well as girls, and the two sides of it pull in opposite directions.
  • It sits so close to Pearl that half the people your child meets will simply drop the ending and use that instead.
