Where it comes from
Origin, sound and short forms
Our story of Peaches
The Romans called the fruit malum persicum, the Persian apple, because it reached them by way of Persia, and every European language took some version of that name: pêche, Pfirsich, persica, peach. The tree is not Persian. It was domesticated in China, where peaches appear in texts and art thousands of years earlier and carry a whole symbolic apparatus about longevity, and it traveled west along the trade routes through central Asia and Persia to the Mediterranean. Naming a thing after the last place you saw it is what happens when the trade route is longer than anybody's knowledge of it, and the mistake is preserved in half the languages of Europe.

The word is transparent and the name is presumably affectionate in origin, but nothing in the record documents what a particular family meant by it or whether it shortens anything.

Fashion outlook
Peaches sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is instantly understood and impossible to mispronounce.
- It is warm in a way that very few names manage without being babyish.
- It is genuinely rare on a birth certificate, which is most of the point.
- It is an ordinary plural noun, which will be remarked on for a lifetime.
- It reads as an affectionate nickname to nearly everybody, so formal settings will ask.
- No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
