The story of Patti
Patricia rose extremely fast in twentieth-century English use and generated four short forms: Pat and Patty from the front, Tricia and Trish from the back. Patty was the older stretch — it had also served Martha in earlier centuries, by a route now largely forgotten. The -i respelling belongs to the 1950s and 1960s, when the ending was applied to Vicki, Kelli, Sherri and dozens more, and Patti peaked in the mid-1950s.
Meaning
noble, patrician

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Irma test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Patti's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Irma climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Irma's path sketches the road Patti is walking now.
Patti sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
