Patrisha writes with sh what the standard spelling writes with ci, and the name underneath is one of the oldest social distinctions in Europe. A patrician was not a rich man or a noble one in the modern sense. He was a man who could name his father — a member of the founding families of Rome, and the word says so.

Where it comes from

The story of Patrisha

The name was rare in English until a princess made it fashionable. Patricia of Connaught was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, a working watercolourist who exhibited under her own name, and an unusually popular figure in the years before the First World War; when a Canadian regiment was raised in a hurry in 1914 it was named after her, and she designed its colors herself and later gave up her royal title to marry a naval officer. The name went from unusual to everywhere across the English-speaking world within a generation of her becoming well known, and the timing is not a coincidence anyone has managed to argue away.

Meaning

of the patricians

The Latin adjective is built directly on the word for father. In the early Republic the patricians were the families who could trace themselves to the men who had first sat in the Senate; everyone else, however wealthy, was a plebeian, and the distinction was hereditary and unbudgeable. Two centuries of political struggle went into prying it open. The feminine form of the adjective is the name, which means it has been in continuous use for the whole of that history and for two thousand years afterwards.

How the name formed

  1. Latin patricius, built on the word for father
  2. Patricia as its feminine form
  3. rare in English until the early twentieth century
  4. a royal namesake makes it fashionable before the First World War
  5. Patrisha appears among the American respellings

Pronouncing Patrisha

puh-TRISH-uh

Three syllables with the weight in the middle. This spelling writes the middle consonant the way English usually writes that sound, which the standard version does not — the ci in Patricia is a Latin ending that English reads as sh out of habit rather than logic.

Fashion outlook

Patrisha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling makes the pronunciation completely obvious, which the standard form does not.
  • Trish and Tricia are both immediately available and both are current.
  • The name has two thousand years behind it and a very good royal story in the middle.
What to consider
  • Patricia is enormously commoner and this spelling will be corrected on every document.
  • It reads to many people as a phonetic rewriting rather than a variant, which some will treat as an error.
  • The full name is closely associated with the middle of the last century.
