Patric
Masculine · “nobleman”
Patric is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 3,040 boys against 73 girls since 1880.
Patrick left two documents behind him, and they are the oldest things written in Ireland by anyone whose name we know. Neither is about snakes. One is an autobiography written to defend himself against a charge, and the other is an open letter denouncing a warlord who had massacred his converts.

The story of Patric
The Confessio and the Letter to Coroticus are short, awkward and entirely believable. Patrick apologizes for his bad Latin, describes being taken as a slave at sixteen, escaping, and going back voluntarily to the country that had enslaved him, and defends himself against colleagues who had raised something from his youth against him. The letter excommunicates a British chieftain whose soldiers had killed and enslaved newly baptized Irish converts. Everything else attached to the name — the snakes, the shamrock, the date — is centuries later. The k on the end of the English spelling is a Middle English addition; this version drops it, which puts it closer to the Latin than the standard form.
Meaning

The Latin patricius named a member of the senatorial class. Patrick used it of himself in the older sense, as a claim about his family's standing in Roman Britain.

Fashion outlook
Patric sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Said aloud it is completely familiar and needs no explanation.
- It has forms in Irish, French, Spanish and Italian.
- The historical figure behind it left first-hand writing, which almost no early saint did.
- Patrick is the standard spelling and will be restored by every form.
- The spelling is recorded for girls as well as boys in the United States.
- The missing k adds no sound, so the difference exists only on paper.
