Where it comes from

The story of Pasqualina

Italian families gave Pasquale and Pasqualina to children born around Easter, and the names were especially common in the south. In 1501 an ancient, badly damaged statue was set up at a corner in Rome and nicknamed Pasquino, and Romans began pinning anonymous verses mocking popes and princes to it; the practice gave English the word pasquinade, a public satire. A German nun, Sister Pascalina Lehnert, ran the household of Eugenio Pacelli from his years as papal envoy in Munich through his reign as Pius XII until his death in 1958, and was known in Rome, not entirely kindly, as La Popessa. Italian emigrants brought Pasqualina to America early in the twentieth century.

Fashion outlook

Pasqualina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A clear, documented meaning tied to a major feast.
  • Rooted in Italian family tradition, with Lina as an easy everyday form.
  • Very rare in America, so a Pasqualina is unlikely to meet another.
What to consider
  • Five syllables is long, and most Pasqualinas are called Lina day to day.
  • Outside Italian families it will need both spelling and pronouncing.
  • It reads as an old-country name to many Italian Americans, which some families love.
