Where it comes from

The story of Pascale

Pascal was a French name for a boy born near Easter, and Pascale its feminine. At nineteen Blaise Pascal built a calculating machine to help his father, a tax official, with endless sums; the Pascaline, as it came to be called, is one of the first mechanical calculators. In 1648 he had his brother-in-law carry a barometer up the Puy de Dôme and watched the mercury fall with the height, showing that the air has weight — which is why the modern unit of pressure is called the pascal. Pascale came into American use in the middle of the twentieth century, mostly with French and French-Canadian families.

Fashion outlook

Pascale sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A clear, settled meaning.
  • Linked to one of the great names of French science.
  • Rare in America.
What to consider
  • English speakers will hear Pascal and may assume a boy.
  • The final e is silent, so some will try to say it.
  • It will need spelling out.
