Where it comes from

The story of Parsa

Persepolis was called Parsa by the people who built it — the Greek name means city of the Persians and is a translation. Arabic has no p, so when Arabic became the administrative language the name shifted to Fars, which is why the language is Farsi and the province is Fars. The word traveled into Persian's own vocabulary meaning devout, and both senses are alive.

Meaning

Persian; pious, devout

Old Persian Parsa named the region and its people, giving Greek Persis and English Persia; the modern Persian parsa means abstinent or pious. Fars province and the Farsi language carry the same word with an Arabic sound shift.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning naming an entire civilization and a personal virtue at once.
  • Five letters and two syllables, quick to write.
  • Well used in Iran, so it has a real community behind it.
What to consider
  • The stress moves to the front in American mouths.
  • It is unfamiliar outside Iranian communities in America.
  • It is close to Parisa, a separate and common women's name.
