Where it comes from

The story of Parke

In medieval England a park was not a public garden but an enclosed tract of land, fenced or walled, where a lord kept deer for hunting under license from the Crown, and the keeper or a neighbor might take the surname Park or Parke. The sense of a public garden came later. In 1937 the auctioneers Hiram Parke and Otto Bernet founded Parke-Bernet Galleries in New York, which became the leading American auction house for art and antiques until Sotheby's bought it in 1964.

Meaning

From the surname Park, 'enclosed land'

Fashion outlook

Parke sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, clear and said exactly as it looks.
  • A documented English surname with a medieval history.
  • Rare as a first name, so a Parke is unlikely to meet another.
What to consider
  • Most people will drop the e and write Park.
  • Park is also a very common Korean surname, so some people may assume it is a family name.
  • One-syllable names can feel abrupt with some surnames; say it with the last name before deciding.
