Ozie is a southern American pet name whose full name cannot be recovered. It might be from Osborn, from Oswald, from Hosea or from nothing at all, and the record does not say; what it does show is that the region produced dozens like it, short, warm, given to children of both sexes and never written down with an explanation.

How old is the name Ozie?

Ozie first appears in US birth records in 1900 — 125 years ago. The typical Ozie alive today was born around 1929, making them about 96 years old. About 200 people named Ozie are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Ozie most popular?

Ozie peaked in 1903, reaching #783 nationally. See the whole 1903 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Ozie

The other Oz is worth clearing up. The author of the American fairy tale said in later life that he had looked up from his desk at a filing cabinet whose bottom drawer was labeled O to Z, and taken the name from it. The story is charming and there is no evidence for it; he told several different accounts of where the name came from over the years, the filing cabinet version appeared late, and researchers have never found the cabinet or the contemporary telling. It has been repeated as fact for a century anyway, which is exactly what happens to a good origin story. The American given name predates the book by a generation in any case, so whatever the drawer did or did not say, it has nothing to do with the children called this.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source can be established. Several full names could produce this shortening and none is documented for any particular family. Names of this kind were made at home, used in speech for years before anybody wrote them on a form, and by the time they reached a birth record they were simply what a person was called. That is a real history, and it is not the same as having an etymology.

Pronouncing Ozie

OH-zee

Two syllables with the stress at the front and a long first vowel, since a single consonant between vowels leaves it long. Ozzie, with two z's, has a short vowel and is a different name.

Ozie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 31 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Ozie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, warm and easy for a small child to say and to write.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record shows it always has.
  • Four letters with nothing silent and nothing ambiguous once the vowel is settled.
What to consider
  • The record carries it for boys and girls both, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • The land of Oz association is universal and inescapable in English.
  • There is no meaning available and no full name to fall back on.
