The story of Ottilie
Saint Odile of Alsace, an eighth-century abbess who is said to have been born blind and to have gained her sight at baptism, became the patron of Alsace and of people with poor eyesight, and her monastery on the Mont Sainte-Odile is still a pilgrimage site. That made the name common across the German-speaking world and in France. It reached America with German emigration in the nineteenth century, which is where its American record sits, and it has been returning recently in Britain rather more than in the United States.
Meaning
prosperity, fortune, inherited wealth
Germanic od or aud means wealth, fortune and inherited property together — the sense is closer to a family's holdings than to money. Odilia and Ottilia are diminutive feminine forms built on it, and Ottilie is the German and French spelling. The same element gives Otto, Odo and the English surname Otis. The reading is documented and not disputed.

The trade-off

- Ottilie, Ottilia, Odilia and Odile are all in use and look quite different from each other.
- In the United States it is unfamiliar enough that it will be spelled out every time.
