The Os- at the front of Oswald, Osborne and Osmond is a word for a god. It is the same element that gives Norse the Aesir, the gods of Asgard, and it opens a long list of English names that were given by people who had recently stopped worshipping them.

Where it comes from

The story of Ossie

Anglo-Saxon royal families used the element heavily and went on using it after conversion: Oswald was a Christian king and a saint, and his name says god-rule in a word that meant the old gods. Nobody appears to have minded. The element closed and opened dozens of names — Oswald, Oswin, Osgar, Osric, Osmond, Osbert — and most of them died out after the Conquest and came back in the Victorian revival. Ossie is the familiar form of any of them, and in American records it is given to boys and girls alike, because a short form ending this way was not yet marked for one side.

Meaning

god

The Old English os and the Old Norse ass are the same word, meaning a heathen god. It survived as a name element long after the religion it referred to had gone, which is common enough in name history.

Ossie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 42 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Ossie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
  • It serves several longer names at once, which gives a family options.
  • The element behind it is one of the oldest recorded in English.
What to consider
  • It reads as a familiar form, and formal settings will look for something longer.
  • The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls in the United States.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the nineteenth century.
