An orrery is a clockwork model of the solar system with the planets on arms, geared so that they move at the right relative speeds. The first one was built by two London instrument makers in about seventeen-oh-four, and the second went to Charles Boyle, fourth Earl of Orrery, who had commissioned nothing and invented nothing. A writer described it as the Earl of Orrery's instrument, the phrase shortened, and the name stuck to every such machine afterwards. The actual makers are a footnote. It is one of the clearest cases of a thing being named after its owner rather than its inventor, which happens constantly — and the earl's own title comes from a barony in County Cork, so a Dublin-born nobleman's Irish place name now labels a piece of eighteenth-century clockwork in every science museum.
