The story of Oliva
The olive is one of the oldest cultivated crops in the Mediterranean and its word is older than either Greek or Latin, borrowed by both from something earlier. Oliva was used as a name in Spain, Italy and Portugal, and there is a Saint Oliva of Palermo. Olivia's first clear appearance is in Twelfth Night, which is why it is often credited to Shakespeare, though an earlier Italian Olivia may lie behind it. In American records Oliva peaks in 1889 and belongs mainly to Spanish-speaking and Italian families, while Olivia has become one of the most popular names in the English-speaking world.
Meaning
olive, olive tree
Latin oliva, the olive and the tree, borrowed from Greek elaia, itself probably from a pre-Indo-European Mediterranean language, as the plant is. Oliva is used as a name directly. Olivia, which may be Shakespeare's coinage or may be an Italian form he knew, is the name that became popular; the two are close but not identical.
