Where it comes from

The story of Olie

Ole is said OH-leh in Norwegian, and an English reader seeing Ole would drop the final e, so immigrant families in the Upper Midwest often wrote it Olie or Oley to keep it two syllables. The name became so closely tied to Norwegian America that Ole and his wife Lena are the stock characters of a whole tradition of gentle jokes told in Minnesota and the Dakotas. For girls, Olie grew separately from Olive and Olivia, and the two roads meet at one spelling.

Meaningscholars disagree

ancestor's heir, through Ole and Olaf; or olive

Ole is the Norwegian and Danish short form of Olaf, from Old Norse Áleifr, ancestor's descendant or heir. As a girl's name, Olie can shorten Olive or Olivia, from the olive tree. The spelling serves both.

Olie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1928, with 20 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Olie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm and simple, with a real Scandinavian history.
  • It works for a boy or a girl, each by its own road.
  • It is almost never given now, so it is distinctive.
What to consider
  • It will be written Ollie by nearly everyone.
  • It leans to boys in the record; a girl named Olie may be assumed to be an Olivia shortened, and a boy may be assumed to be an Oliver.
