Where it comes from

The story of Octavio

The name begins with the Latin octavus, "eighth," and the Roman clan that carried it as a family name — the Octavii. Its most consequential bearer was Gaius Octavius, who after his adoption by Julius Caesar became the emperor Augustus, which is why Octavius and its expanded form Octavianus stayed in the European name stock long after Rome fell. Spanish and Portuguese smoothed Octavius into Octavio, and the name settled deeply in Latin America; the Mexican poet Octavio Paz carried it through the twentieth century. It reached the United States mainly with Spanish-speaking families, and has been recorded here without a real gap ever since.

Meaning

Eighth, from Latin octavus

The Roman gens Octavia took its name from the numeral, and in the Roman naming system such number-names were often given by birth order.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Documented in continuous use since Roman times, with a meaning that is settled and easy to explain in one word.
  • Has a ready-made short form, Tavo, already in everyday Spanish use — no need to invent one.
  • Works unchanged in Spanish and Portuguese, and has close cousins in Italian, French and Catalan for family across borders.
  • Spelled the way it sounds in Spanish, and familiar enough in the United States that most people will have heard it before.
What to consider
  • It is uncommon enough that a child will likely be the only Octavio in a school — pleasant for some families, and a lifetime of spelling it out for others.
  • English speakers unfamiliar with it often reach first for Octavia, the feminine Roman name, or shift the stress. A single correction usually fixes it.
  • "Eighth" invites the obvious question about birth order, so expect to answer it now and then — the Roman family name is the whole answer.
