Nygel
Masculine · “Neil in Latin form”
Nygel is Nigel written with a y, and Nigel has a history of looking like something it is not. It began as Nigellus, a medieval Latin form of the name Neil, and because nigellus was also a real Latin word, 'blackish', from niger, 'black', the name has been glossed as 'dark' ever since.

The story of Nygel
Norman and English scribes wrote Nigellus in charters for men known in speech as Neil or Nele, and the Latin form was later taken back into English as Nigel. Sir Walter Scott gave the name to the hero of The Fortunes of Nigel in 1822, and it grew common in Britain in the following century. Nygel writes the i with a y, a change that alters nothing aloud.
Meaningscholars disagree
Neil in Latin form, read as 'dark'
Nigel comes from Nigellus, the medieval Latin form of Neil, from Irish Niall, whose own meaning is disputed. Because nigellus is also a Latin diminutive of niger, 'black', the name is often explained as 'dark'. Nygel adds no meaning of its own.

Fashion outlook
Nygel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

- Nige is ready as a short form.
- Most people will write Nigel, and forms will correct it; expect to spell out the y.
- In the United States Nigel is often heard as a British name, and Nygel will carry that impression too.
