Where it comes from

Our story of Norvel

For about a hundred and fifty years, one speech from that play was the standard recitation piece in English and American schools — a boy announcing his own name and describing his father as a frugal swain, learned by heart by generation after generation and performed at every school exhibition in the country. The play itself is barely read now. The name survived because the speech did: parents who had recited it as children used it for sons, long after anybody remembered the plot, and by the time the recitation fell out of fashion the name was in the record on its own account.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name appears in an eighteenth-century tragedy as the assumed name of a shepherd who turns out to be a nobleman's son, and it may have been invented for that purpose. A Scottish surname of similar shape exists and cannot be shown to be connected.

Norvel sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1921, with 22 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Norvel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, firm and read correctly on sight.
  • It has a documented literary source, which few names of its era do.
  • It is genuinely rare now.
What to consider
  • Norvell and Norval are both in the record and his will be written as one of them.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
  • The play it came from is forgotten, so the reference explains nothing to anybody.
