The story of Norton
The most memorable bearer awarded the title to himself. In 1859 a San Francisco businessman who had lost his whole fortune in a failed attempt to corner the rice market walked into a newspaper office and handed over a proclamation declaring himself Emperor of the United States. The city played along for twenty-one years. He wore a uniform, issued decrees dissolving Congress, and printed his own banknotes in small denominations that local shops accepted. Two of his proclamations called for a bridge and a tunnel joining San Francisco to Oakland, and both were eventually built. He died in the winter of 1880 and an enormous crowd turned out for the funeral. American birth records take up the name within a couple of years of his death, which proves nothing at all but is a coincidence worth having.
Meaning
the northern farmstead
Old English, joining the word for north to the element meaning an enclosure or settlement. Because so many places carry the name independently, the surname is scattered across England rather than descending from any single family.

Fashion outlook
Norton sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spelling and the sound agree completely and neither ever needs repeating.
- It fits the surname-name pattern that is currently in wide use.
- The meaning is transparent and pleasantly ordinary rather than grand.
- The brand density is the real obstacle: several large companies own the word in most people's minds.
- The generation that used it in America is now very old.
- Neither short form is much use, so the full name will do all the work.
