The story of Normand
The speed of the change is the remarkable part: a Viking warband was granted land around Rouen in the early tenth century, and within a century and a half their descendants were conducting the conquest of England in French, with Frankish law and Latin charters. The name Norman survived in England as a reminder and became a given name there. Normand is the French form and reached the United States overwhelmingly through Quebec, which is why it appears in New England and the Great Lakes rather than evenly.
Meaning
north man
Old French Normant and Germanic nortman both mean a man from the north, and the word named Scandinavians generally before it named the specific group who settled in France. The derivation is transparent and not disputed. Normandy is the land of the northmen, and every Norman name in England — a considerable share of the whole English name stock — arrived from a duchy founded by Vikings who had stopped being Vikings.

Fashion outlook
Normand sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The history behind it is documented, dramatic and easy to tell in three sentences.
- Norm is a ready short form and a complete working name.
- The French spelling marks a specific heritage that the English one does not.
- Norman is the English spelling and this will be rewritten as that outside French-speaking communities.
- The final d is sounded in English and silent in French, so the name is said two ways.
- It is strongly associated with the oldest living generations and has not returned.
