The story of Nishant
Sanskrit anta and English end both descend from a single word of the Indo-European parent language, so the name's second half is a distant cousin of an everyday English word; nisha, 'night', completes it as 'the night's end'. In 1975 the director Shyam Benegal made Nishant, a film in which a village schoolteacher's wife is abducted by the brothers of the local landlord, and it ends with the villagers rising against them — dawn after a long night, as the title promises. Nishant has been given by Indian-American families since the late twentieth century.
