J did not exist as a separate letter until the sixteenth century; before that it was a decorative form of i used at the beginnings and ends of words, and an Italian scholar had to argue that the two should be treated as different letters at all.

Origin, sound and short forms
Our story of Nijah
Latin had twenty-three letters and no j. Scribes wrote a longer, hooked i at the start of a word or at the end of a run of numerals, purely for legibility, and the two forms were the same letter. In the fifteen-twenties an Italian grammarian proposed splitting them, giving the consonant sound its own letter and leaving the vowel to i, and the reform took slowly: English dictionaries were still filing i and j together in the eighteenth century. That is why j is so common at the front of modern names and so rare in the oldest English vocabulary, and why every j in an English word is either a borrowing or a modern coinage. A name beginning with one is, by that fact alone, no older than the Renaissance.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source and no meaning. The name is an American build, and the h at the end is doing what h does in a great many modern names: it marks the word as a name rather than a word, and it changes nothing that can be heard. Glosses assigning it to Arabic or Hebrew are working from the shape.
Pronouncing Nijah
NEE-zhuh
Two syllables with the stress at the front. Some families say nye-JAH with the weight at the back, and the spelling supports both; the h at the end is silent in every reading.

Fashion outlook
Nijah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, soft and easy to say, with nothing in it that gives an English speaker trouble.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- Nia is a complete, current name sitting inside it.
- Two live stress patterns and the spelling settles neither.
- The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
- There is no meaning to give a child who asks.
