The story of Nigel
The Normans carried Njal to England, Latinized it as Nigellus on the assumption it came from niger, and by the nineteenth century Nigel had been revived from the Latin as an English given name — a name that exists because of a wrong guess. It appears in American records in current use.
Meaningscholars disagree
champion; or dark
From the Latin Nigellus, a rendering of the Irish and Norse Njal or Niall. Medieval scribes treated Nigellus as a diminutive of niger, 'black', which it is not; the Latin form then produced Nigel. Niall's own meaning is disputed — 'champion' and 'cloud' are both proposed.

The Cornell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nigel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cornell climbed just as high around 1952, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cornell's path sketches the road Nigel is walking now.
