Where it comes from

The story of Nickalas

In Nicholas Nickleby, published in 1838 and 1839, Dickens sent his hero to teach at Dotheboys Hall, a Yorkshire boarding school where unwanted boys were starved and beaten; the portrait was drawn from real schools Dickens had visited, and the public outcry helped close them. In 1939 Nicholas Winton, a young London stockbroker, organized trains that carried 669 mostly Jewish children from Prague to safety in Britain; he said nothing of it for nearly fifty years, until his wife found a scrapbook in the attic. Nickalas is one of the spellings American families used for Nicholas.
