Where it comes from

The story of Nicholos

The tradition says that at the Council of Nicaea, arguing about the nature of Christ, Nicholas lost his temper and struck Arius across the face; that he was stripped of his office and imprisoned for it overnight; and that he was reinstated in the morning after the other bishops had a vision. It is a wonderful story. It appears nowhere for about a thousand years after the council, the earliest lists of attendees do not include him, and scholars regard it as a late legend attached to a saint who had already accumulated a great many. It is now painted on icons, printed on greeting cards and told with enormous enjoyment, which is roughly what happens to any story this good.

Fashion outlook

Nicholos sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Nick and Cole are both available as short forms and both are thoroughly established.
  • The meaning is settled and can be given in three words.
  • The name is understood everywhere in the Christian world without explanation.
What to consider
  • Nicholas and Nicolas are both far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected constantly.
  • The changed letter cannot be heard, so the spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • No reason for the spelling is documented, so there is nothing to say when someone asks.
