Where it comes from

The story of Newman

The most consequential bearer changed church in middle age and then explained himself at length. He had been the most influential Anglican clergyman of his generation; he converted, was attacked in print as dishonest, and answered with an account of the development of his own religious opinions year by year — a book that reversed his reputation almost overnight and is still read as a model of intellectual autobiography. The attack that provoked it is remembered only because of the reply. He was made a cardinal at the end of his life and canonized in the twenty-first century.

Two ordinary English words joined, and the sense is entirely transparent. It belongs with a small set of surnames describing a person's relation to the community rather than their trade or their father.

Fashion outlook

Newman sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is transparent and needs no explaining whatever.
  • It belongs to the surname-name tradition without being a common example.
  • The spelling and the sound agree completely.
What to consider
  • It is two ordinary English words and will be read as a description.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
  • Neither short form is much use, so the full name does the work.
