Where it comes from

The story of Nero

Nero was a Claudian family name carried by respectable Romans for centuries — Gaius Claudius Nero won a decisive battle against Hasdrubal in 207 BC. The emperor's reputation, largely built by hostile senatorial historians, buried the name. Suetonius records that the family took it because it meant strong in Sabine. The Italian word for black is unrelated and often assumed to be the source.

Meaning

strong, vigorous

From a Sabine word for strength, adopted by the Claudian family as a cognomen; the Sabines were an Italic people absorbed by Rome early. Italian nero, meaning black, is a separate word from Latin niger.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning from a genuinely obscure and interesting language.
  • Four letters and two syllables, about as easy to write as a name gets.
  • Read correctly on sight by every English speaker.
What to consider
  • The emperor is an overwhelming association and not a good one.
  • The Italian word for black is widely assumed to be the meaning.
  • It is used as a dog's name often enough to be noticed.
