Neriah
Feminine · Hebrew roots · “lamp of the Lord”
Neriah is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 3,651 girls against 97 boys since 1880.
Neriah comes from the Hebrew Bible, where it belongs to the father of Baruch, the scribe who wrote down the words of the prophet Jeremiah — a name from the household staff of one of scripture's great books. In Hebrew it is built from ner, a lamp, joined to the name of God. In American mouths it has settled into three syllables that end on the same open vowel as Mariah and Moriah.

The story of Neriah
The name appears in the Hebrew scriptures as Neriyah, borne by the father of two brothers who served in Jerusalem in the last years before the Babylonian exile: Baruch, Jeremiah's scribe, and Seraiah. The Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible carried it over as Nerias, and from there it reached English Bibles as Neriah, where for centuries it sat quietly in the text rather than in the naming pool. Modern Hebrew took it up again as a given name for boys, and it also names a place in Israel. In the United States it has been used almost entirely for girls, and only recently, arriving with the wave of -iah names alongside Moriah and Mariah.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Karma test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Neriah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Karma climbed just as high around 2009, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off
- A documented biblical name with a clear Hebrew meaning — the answer to "what does it mean" is short and settled.
- Phonetically regular in English: most readers get close on the first try, even seeing it for the first time.
- Ready-made short forms in Neri, Ria and Nia, each of which also works as a name on its own.
- Rare enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate, while the -iah pattern is thoroughly familiar.
- Two pronunciations circulate — nuh-RYE-uh and the Hebrew neh-ree-YAH — so the name will need correcting or confirming fairly often.
- In the Bible and in modern Israel, Neriah is a man's name; in American records it is given to girls. Hebrew-speaking friends or relatives may read it as masculine, which is worth knowing in advance.
- It sits close to Moriah, Mariah, Nadia and Nerissa, and will occasionally be misheard or written as one of them.
- The American use of it is recent, so nearly everyone who carries it here is still a child — there are few grown Neriahs to point to yet.
