Nello is Italian, and it is what is left when a long name is cut from the front rather than the back. Antonello, Raffaello, Leonello — all of them can end up here, and the piece that survives is the diminutive ending rather than the name itself.

Where it comes from

The story of Nello

The name is far better known abroad than in English, and for an odd reason. A Victorian novel about a poor Flemish boy and his dog — the boy is called Nello — was a modest success in English and then became a fixture in Japan, where it has been adapted for television and film repeatedly, is known to essentially everyone, and draws visitors to Antwerp looking for places from the story. There is a statue there now, put up for those visitors. It is one of the clearest cases of a book finding its real audience a hemisphere away from where it was written, and an English name being famous in a country that has no connection to it at all.

A small one — the Italian diminutive ending used alone

The -ello ending comes from the Latin diminutive -ellus, and it does in Italian what -let does in English. Standing alone as a name it means, more or less, the small one, without saying small what. Which full name a particular family's Nello came off is usually unrecoverable, and by the twentieth century it was being given directly, with no long form behind it at all.

Nello sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1915, with 45 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Nello sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, musical and easy for an English speaker despite being entirely Italian.
  • It carries a long formal name behind it if a family wants one — Antonello or Leonello.
  • It is genuinely rare in American use without being unfamiliar in sound.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Nell, a woman's name, on the telephone.
  • The spelling is recorded for girls as well, and the small recent handful has gone to both.
  • As a diminutive it can read as a child's name, which is a thing some grown men mind and others do not.
