Where it comes from

The story of Nellie

Elizabeth Cochrane wrote as Nellie Bly, a name taken from a Stephen Foster song; she had herself committed to the asylum on Blackwell's Island to expose it, and then set out to beat the eighty days of Jules Verne's Phileas Fogg, circling the globe by ship and train in seventy-two. Helen Porter Mitchell, from Australia, became the soprano Nellie Melba, taking her surname from Melbourne; the chef Auguste Escoffier created peach Melba in her honor, and Melba toast too.

Nellie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 19 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Nellie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Warm, friendly and easy to say.
  • A long history and famous namesakes.
  • Can stand alone or serve Helen, Ellen or Eleanor.
What to consider
  • Some will think of 'nervous Nellie', an old phrase for a worrier.
  • It reads as a great-grandmother's name to some people.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every Nellie is a girl.

Nobody names a baby alone.
