The story of Neale
The Norse took the name home with them. In Iceland it became Njáll, and it belongs to the greatest of the sagas — a long, cold account of a lawyer who tries to settle every quarrel by legal means and is burned in his house at the end of it, which is as Icelandic a story as exists. That saga is one of the reasons the name survived in the north at all. Meanwhile in Ireland the original went on being royal, and in Scotland it became a clan name and then a surname, and English received it three or four separate times in slightly different shapes: Neil, Neal, Niall, Neale. They are one name that has been out of the country and back.

A champion, or a cloud — the two readings compete
Two readings compete and they are not close. One takes the Irish Niall as a word about a champion or a passionate man; the other connects it to a word for a cloud. Both have serious support, neither has won, and the readings offered confidently by name books are simply one of the two with the argument left out.

Fashion outlook
Neale sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, firm and understood everywhere in the English-speaking world.
- The history is genuinely international, which gives a child something to follow.
- It works unchanged from a playground to a signature.
- Neil and Neal are the spellings most people know, and his will be written as one of them.
- The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
- The meaning is genuinely contested, so any confident gloss comes with an argument attached.
