Nathon
Masculine · “he gave”
Nathon writes the reduced final vowel with an o, which changes nothing audible. The prophet the name belongs to did two things that mattered: he confronted a king to his face, and he arranged a succession. The second is the less famous and had considerably longer consequences.

Where it comes from
From A Hebrew verb form meaning he has given to Nathon
The story of Nathon
At the end of David's life the succession was contested and the older claimant had already held a coronation feast. Nathan went to Bathsheba, told her what was happening, coached her on exactly what to say to the king and in what order, and then arrived himself a few minutes later to confirm it, which is as clear a piece of political stage management as the Hebrew Bible contains. Solomon was anointed the same day. The account gives the dialogue in detail and does not editorialise about it at all. Whatever else the prophet was, he was a man who understood how a decision gets made in a room, and the kingdom that followed was arranged by that conversation rather than by anything more elevated.
Meaning
he gave
The Hebrew name is a verb form meaning he has given, generally understood as an abbreviation of a longer sentence-name in which the giver is God. The reading is settled. The final vowel in this spelling is reduced almost to nothing in speech, which is precisely why it can be written as an a, an e or an o without a listener noticing.

Two syllables, stress on the first, with the second reduced almost to nothing. The th is the voiceless one of thin, which is not what the Hebrew has; the Hebrew consonant is a plain t and the th is a transliteration convention.

Fashion outlook
Nathon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is universally known and needs no explaining anywhere.
- Nate is immediate and works from childhood into adulthood.
- It carries a settled Hebrew meaning and a genuinely interesting bearer.
- Nathan is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected into it constantly.
- The respelled vowel is inaudible, so the spelling has to be given every time.
- It is frequently assumed to be a short form of Nathaniel, which is a different name.
